Best Attractions and Things To Do in Pisa

Many people know Pisa for the Leaning Tower, a bell tower structure standing tall despite its dramatic tilt. The tower’s popularity may overshadow the other attractions in the city, but they are just as special as it is. If you don’t believe us, then keep reading below to find out all the major locations to see and things to do in and around Pisa. A lot lies beyond the Leaning Tower, as the city offers a rich history, scenic riverbanks, aperitivo culture, local flavours, and a lot more than one usually expects.

Visit Popular Attractions

This goes without saying, but Piazza dei Miracoli must be visited at all costs because you can find the most iconic monuments of Pisa here in one place. The complex invites you to explore the globally famous structures, namely the Cathedral (Duomo), the Baptistery, the Leaning Tower of Pisa (Campanile), and the Camposanto Monumentale (Monumental Cemetery). While the Pisa Tower can be climbed to get the best view of the city, the Duomo di Pisa can be explored to witness the architectural wonder built during the Romanesque era. Visiting the Cathedral is also one of the things you can do for free in Pisa. Since the location of these landmarks is just a 10-minute drive from the Pisa Airport, you can quickly reach them upon arrival.

Take a Boat Ride on the Arno River

Boat rides on the Arno River allow you to see Pisa’s landscape through an unusual lens. You can book the tour in advance and enjoy kayak tours and mini-cruises around the urban area and the natural park of Migliarino – San Rossore – Massaciuccoli. Spend Time at Giardino Scotto

Giardino Scotto, or Scotto Garden, is located within the walls of what was once a city fortress. Built during medieval times, the garden underwent multiple reconstructions due to the damage caused by war and public usage over the years. It now features trees and flowers, brought here from different parts of Europe, and is free for anyone’s access. One can come here for leisurely walks, picnics, and just to soak in the serene, lush space away from the bustling city. There is also a playground where kids can play in an open space. Many local concerts, open-air cinema, and local festivals are also hosted throughout the year at the Giardino Scotto. If you are staying in central Pisa, you can reach this place in under 10 minutes on foot.

Stroll Through Nature at the Botanical Garden and Museum

The Botanical Garden and Museum (Orto e Museo Botanico di Pisa) lies nearly 300 meters from the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Founded in 1544, it is one of the oldest university botanical gardens in Europe, with plants from all over the world. Spread across three hectares of land, the garden has multiple themed sections with a vast selection of specimens. Apart from being a space filled with tranquillity, it is a place where one can leave with a learning experience about botanical research and education. Though entry is free for children under 6 and everyone on the first Sunday of each month, an entry ticket is required on other days. You can also opt for guided tours on the third Saturday in the afternoons.
